History of the Wind Chime:
The wind  chime has existed from prehistoric times in many cultures. It gained its most elegent and  prolific development in east and south Asia, where it was often elaborately decorated and hung from the eaves of sacred structures. Buddhists made use of wind chimes attaching them to the  eaves of temples and shrines. In China the  wind chime became a decorative art in private  homes as well as  on sacred structures, and in the 19th and 20th centuries wind chime popularity spread  widely among Western  countries.

Healing effects of the Wind Chime:
Many cultures believe that tones  have  a healing effect on the body, calm the mind and  awaken the  spirit. The resonance and vibration of sound releases stress and emotional blockages in the body and calms the  mind. Wind chimes help enhance the mind/body/spirit connectiion bringing a sense of peace and well  being.
Early wind chimes were hollow or solid metal or woden tubes which were hung outside where the wind caused the tubes to strike against each other. Present wind chimes  have a striker(clapper) hung between the tubes, the striker(clapper) may be made of metal, wood  or rubber.

Sound frequency is determined by the length, width, thickness and the type of material. There are formulas that help predict the proper length to achieve a particular note. It is common practice in high quality (tuned chimes)  to use a patented suspension system as well as having the striker contact the tubes at the precise point to produce the desired tunes.
Tuned Wind Chimes:
The tuned wind chime is  made  of hollow alluminum or steel tubes and will most often incorporate a special suspension system and striker(clapper) designed to produce the desired tune. Tuned wind chimes come in various sizes from 30 inch's long to over 7 feet in length. Extreme care should be taken when choosing a place to hang the large tuned chimes. If you are looking for chimes that will produce exact musical notes the tuned wind chimes are the perfect chime.
